Rev. Jackson backs Wisniewski to head N.J. Democratic Party

January 20, 2010

Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex), who is in line to become the next chairman of the state Democratic Party, Wednesday received the endorsement of the Rev. Reginald T. Jackson, director of the New Jersey Black Minister′s Council.

"Like many of us, John Wisniewski came from humble beginnings in a working class family," Jackson said. "John has never forgotten his roots, and that′s why as a leader in the state Assembly he has delivered for our children, our seniors and our community, time after time. John and I share many of the same ideals for our state and our Democratic Party. I urge every Democrat to rally with me in support of John Wisniewski to lead our party into this new decade.

Jackson is a leading figure among the state′s African-American community. As pastor at St. Matthew AME Church in Orange since 1981, his church has grown from about 150 members to more than 2,000.

Wisniewski welcomed the endorsement.

"Rev. Jackson is a leading advocate for improving the quality of life for all of us who call New Jersey home," he said. "It has always been an honor to work together with him on many issues of great importance to our citizens. Today, I am especially grateful for Rev. Jackson′s pledge of support for my intentions to continue to improve and enhance New Jersey′s Democratic Party as its next chair."

NewJerseyNewsroom.com reported on Nov. 10 that Wisniewski, 47, of Sayreville, would replace Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) as state Democratic chairman as part of a coup within the party that led to Sen. Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) ousting Sen. Richard Codey (D-Essex) as Senate president, and Assemblywoman Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex) becoming Assembly speaker. Cryan, who was guiding the party when Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine lost re-election to Republican Chris Chris Christie, became Assembly majority leader.

Wisniewski was re-elected to a seventh Assembly term on Nov. 3.
